Small businesses are building AI agents. Do you know which ones are running in yours?
New Pax8 research found that 35% of AI-engaged small businesses discovered AI tools, workflows, or agents running without approval in the past six months. A simple AI list and a monthly review can help you stay in control.
If someone asked you today to list every AI tool and agent working in your business, could you do it? For many small businesses, the honest answer is no.
On October 12, Pax8, a company that sells cloud and AI software to small businesses through IT partners, released its Q3 2026 SMB AI Pulse Report. It surveyed 1,150 business leaders at companies with 5 to 499 employees in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Sweden. This is vendor research, but the findings are worth a close look.
35% of AI-engaged businesses found tools, workflows, or agents running without official approval in the past six months. At the same time, 67% have built at least one AI solution that is now in regular use, and 46% of builders are building or testing agents that complete multi-step tasks on their own.
Two more numbers stood out to me. 49% of businesses that paid for AI got at least one bill higher than expected. And 55% of decision-makers spend three or more hours a week reviewing or fact-checking AI output. As The Next Web reported, Pax8 found that usage-based charges are the hardest to forecast.
Why this matters for a small business
Building with AI is a good sign. It means your team is curious and creative. But an agent nobody knows about can touch client data, send messages, or run up costs quietly. You cannot guide what you cannot see. Clarity protects your clients, your budget, and your reputation.
What I would do this week
- Make a simple AI list. Ask your team which tools, workflows, and agents they use, what each one does, and who owns it.
- Set a spending alert or monthly cap on every AI account that bills by usage.
- Pick one agent that touches clients and add a human review step before anything goes out.
My takeaway: Automate the process, not the relationship. Know what your AI is doing, keep a person responsible for each agent, and your team can build with confidence.
