Customers trust AI service twice as much when a human is within reach
New Five9 research found that trust in AI customer service rises from 26% to 55% when people can clearly reach a human. Here is how a small business can build that door into every AI agent.
What makes a customer trust your AI assistant? New research says the answer is not a smarter bot. It is a visible way to reach a person.
On October 14, Five9, a contact center software company, shared a survey it ran with Hanover Research. They asked 3,000 consumers in the U.S., U.K., and Germany about customer service. 55% trust AI to resolve their issue when a clear option to reach a human is available. When there is no human option, that drops to 26%.
The same study found that 71% say it is very or extremely important to know when they are talking to an AI agent. 92% give AI less than 10 minutes before they want a human. And roughly a third say they had to repeat information they already gave the bot once they were handed to a person. This is vendor research, but the pattern is easy to recognize.
A separate Consumer Cellular survey of 482 adults aged 50 and older, reported by Telecom Reseller on October 20, points the same way. More than eight in 10 said they would consider leaving a company if an automated system trapped them without a way to reach a human.
Why this matters for a small business
Your clients chose you because of a relationship. An AI agent can answer the simple questions fast, and that is a real gift to a busy owner. But the moment a client feels stuck, the relationship is at risk. A clear path to you is what makes the AI feel safe to use.
What I would do this week
- Tell people plainly when they are talking with AI. A short line at the start of the chat or email is enough.
- Add a visible "talk to a person" option, and decide who answers it and how fast.
- Make sure the handoff passes along the conversation so your client never has to repeat their story.
My takeaway: Automate the process, not the relationship. Let AI handle the routine work, and always keep a human within reach.
