Small business use of AI agents grew eightfold since May. Are you asking or delegating?
New OpenAI research found that small business users of its agent tools in the EU grew more than eightfold since May 2026. The shift is from asking AI questions to handing it whole tasks, and that calls for a clear human checkpoint.
When you open an AI tool today, do you ask it a question, or do you hand it a job to finish? That small difference is where the biggest change in business AI is happening right now.
On October 14, OpenAI Economic Research published a report called "The EU's next chapter in AI is agentic." It describes people moving beyond asking questions to using agents that carry out tasks from planning through completion. This is vendor data from OpenAI's own business customers, so it shows how its products are used, not how every business uses AI. Still, the pattern is worth noticing.
Since May 2026, weekly active users of OpenAI's agent tools at EU small and medium businesses grew more than eightfold, with growth in every member state. The report counts a small or medium business as an account with 200 or fewer users. Among its EU business customers, agent tools now produce more than half of the AI output. TechRadar reported that figure as 55%, and noted it measures output, not the share of companies using AI.
The report also found a wide gap in how deeply firms use AI. The most active EU firms generated more than four times as much AI output per user as typical EU firms.
Why this matters for a small business
Agents are no longer only for big companies with large tech teams. A five person firm can now hand off a full task, like preparing a client onboarding packet or sorting a week of invoices. But when AI does the work instead of answering a question, a mistake can travel further before anyone sees it. The value comes from choosing the right task and keeping a person in charge of the result.
What I would do this week
- Pick one repeat task you still do by hand from start to finish, and write down its steps.
- Try handing that whole task to an agent, then review the output yourself before anything reaches a client.
- Decide who on your team owns that agent and checks its work each week.
My takeaway: Automate the process, not the relationship. Let agents carry the routine work from start to finish, and keep your people at the checkpoints that matter to your clients.
