58% of small employers now use AI agents. The winners keep the job small.

A new survey says most small employers already use AI agents. Separate research shows the fastest returns come from a tightly bounded job, clean data, and good oversight.

Is it better to launch AI agents everywhere, or to start with one small job? Two new studies point to the same answer.

First, the adoption news. The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council released its Check Up Survey on October 8. It surveyed 516 small business owners with 2 to 99 employees in September. 58% of small employers say they use AI agents regularly or occasionally, and another 14% are considering or planning to use them.

So agents are no longer only for big companies. The real question now is how to get value from them.

Salesforce surveyed 2,025 agentic AI decision-makers in 20 countries for a study published in August. Its headline is simple: first to launch is not fastest to ROI. Among companies with agents deployed, returns arrived in about eight months on average. Professional and business services got there fastest, at 6.5 months.

Two success drivers tied at the top, each named by 36%: a tightly bounded use case, and clean, accessible data when the agent acts. Oversight mattered too. Organizations with below-average governance were nearly twice as likely to discover an agent working outside its limits only after a serious error, 32% compared with 18%. This is vendor research, and the results are self-reported, but the pattern makes sense.

Why this matters for a small business

If you are a coach, consultant, attorney, or founder, you already work in the kind of service business that saw returns fastest. You do not need a big rollout. You need one clear job, tidy information, and a person watching.

What I would do this week

  • Pick one task with a clear start and finish, like sending meeting recaps or collecting intake documents.
  • Clean up the information the agent will use, such as your templates, contact list, or FAQ.
  • Decide who reviews the agent's work, and how they will know when something goes wrong.

My takeaway: Small and well-watched beats big and fast. Automate the process, not the relationship.
